Many times, you would have wondered what are these buttons
on your old Mp3 players which said Rock, Pop, Jazz and Blues in sound settings
would mean. When I was kid, I never had the interest to dig deep into things and
find out what they meant. But as a grown adult it I can say it is one of the
things that I have evolved myself into. This interest of me made me dig deep
into this question which was there in my mind from a long time. This led me to an
exploration which introduced me to a very big world of understanding genres of
music. Ultimately, I came to know this single life I have is not enough to know
all about music. Not even one button of my old MP3 player.
At this point of time it is a bit necessary to understand
why am I making such a serious allegation. Let us have a short consider how different
kinds of music classes evolved chronologically and simultaneously at different
parts of this planet.
So why is finding your music style is important?
It often dictates what musician
puts in and what the audience expects out from it. Clearly a lot of music
doesn't fit in boxes so easily but a lot of music often does. It describes who
you can relate to and what kind of creations you would often like. In many
cases age and terrain plays a very important role in what kind of music one
likes. If one is exposed to a kind of music it is so natural that he is not
left out with many choices but to like the one he is listening to. It is something
like these radio songs. 10th time you will start singing with the radio.
Many
of the genres fit into sociological needs. Christian rock, comedy rock,
children music to name some. In these cases, the message and the audience to
which it Is delivered is more important than the music itself. Well In this
case we can also consider Raps and hip hops also to be under this section up to
certain extent where simple lyrical content along with the background is very
important. Many genres have always been based around a specific geographical
location. Bands in specific parts of the world naturally have similar
influences, places to play, local exposure and reactions to each other, and the
locations become ingrained in their music and often in the names of their
scenes. There are many genres with these three words as either pre-of post
fixes to the original mother genres itself. They would be a slight variation or
the extended versions of the parent genres. difficult subject but one that's
important.
Can people ignore the importance
of race in the development of the Blues, Rock & Roll, Disco, Hip Hop. Most
of these were created initially by African-Americans artists and audiences and
then later developed into something that was culturally larger (i.e. White
people began to get involved and listen to). On the flip side of this are
culture difference with the Uk as well. I personally feel most of these
creations by afro Americans were being initially created to fight against the
pain thy faced during 60s,70, s80s by white Americans and so. Especially Blues.
There was so much pain in the lyrics. It is said that when they have no money
they turn blues. That is why it Is called as blues. Perhaps. Culture also plays
a very important role in this for example Bhangra from India is nothing but
typical Indian Punjabi dance. Fusion is a kind of genre where two of the popular
music styles are mixed to form a new kind.
On a final note whatever kind of music you like it is important for human
being to listen to something and like it. Because I feel it shapes you in
longer run.
